Landsec own and manage Buchanan Galleries, and are responsible for the re-development project, working with a team of design experts. In consultation with the community, this team will develop a masterplan, to create a new world-class urban neighbourhood, which will be submitted as a planning application to Glasgow City Council in early 2023.
Despite extensive investigations, they have not been able to find a way to convert the existing Buchanan Galleries building for practical alternative use, which is why this project is being proposed. This development offers the opportunity to open up the site and re-connect it to the rest of the city. Naturally, with a development of this size there will be some short-term disruption, but Landsec will work closely with the local community and businesses to minimise this and ensure everyone is communicated with and consulted throughout the construction process.
Glasgow’s heritage and identity is being carefully considered and reflected within the plans which will also complement the city’s iconic grid layout. Landsec will also work with a range of brands, be they independent, local and nationally or internationally recognised to develop the right mix of retail for people to enjoy, as well as bringing in new, bars, restaurants entertainment venues and workspaces.
Environmental sustainability is at the heart of the masterplan vision and Net Zero, achieving a balance between the carbon emissions put into the atmosphere and those taken out, is a fundamental target of the project.
